produced art for many different reasons, ranging from the "official commissions" ordered by the SS guards and camp functionaries to the secret scraps of paper with "clandestine" images that served as catharsis or as documentation, to be smuggled to the world beyond the concentration camps. Many of these works were gestures of resistance.
